If this songs doesn't get your feet tapping then there's no hope for you. You're too far gone. I try to avoid this cheesy "Friday Feeling" genre of songs because I don't think it should be limited to Fridays - if this is the first song you hear on a Tuesday it can set you up for a great day!
Even before winning his three Grammy awards for mixtape, Coloring Book, Chance The Rapper was already well on his way to being an industry-changing artist.
This is another one of those songs where you get lost in the rabbit-hole of the lyrics - and that's even after listening to the song 20 times and trying to focus on all the different sounds and components that come together to merge into this "Chigago, Soul, Churchy, Hip-Hop, Duke, Jazz" feel. As he says in this video, he wanted it to be overproduced and force people to listen to the song.
I'm only scratching the surface of the what I want to talk about with the songs. I'm working on having a more structured approach where I can speak about things like the word-play, alliteration, assonance, rhyming scheme, incorporation of slang, extended metaphors, analogies, double meanings - and that's just the lyrics.
The notable lyric is a reference to the TV show Community in which Childish Gambino plays a character called Troy - who is close friends with a character called Abed. Coming off tour with "Troy" (Childish Gambino) after nightly searches for " a bed". Behave yourself, Chance.
I wouldn't say I'm musically gifted so any mention of how a song is constructed is from my ignorant perspective but the more I do this the more I'm looking to learn and understand the detail, creativity and genius that goes into making a song as complex and amazing as this one!
Enjoy!
