Song: Human
Artist: Jon Bellion
Album (year): The Definition (2014)
Notable Lyric: "See I got GPS on my phone // And I can follow it to get home // If my location is never unknown // Tell me why I still feel lost "
This is the first time I'm introducing one of my absolute favourite music artists - Jon Bellion. He is lined up to feature in my Artist of the Week soon when I'll go into more depth about his music, lyrics, and pure genius; but for now I'm just highlighting this song. Human.
Choosing the "notable lyric" for this song was definitely not easy and I would have written out the entire song if I hadn't limited myself to a lyric. I've also included the acoustic version of the song as a) the normal version has no video; b) it continues the initial theme of songs; c) the normal version is very Bellion-esque in terms of how the beat is made which I'm bursting to talk about in my "Views & Reviews" section.
I'll do my best to summarise how I interpret this song in a sentence: The continuous internal battle of trying to appreciate what you have versus the fear of wanting more while risking losing it all.
"I spent four thousand on the Mart McFlys; yet I'm still petrified of going broke"
The reason I've overplayed this song is because of how raw and honest the lyrics are. The acoustic version adds to the emotional effect of the song. Admitting to the complexity of being a mere "human", not actually being in much control as well as dealing with the internal and external expectations placed upon you is painfully true. I believe that we find comfort in the idea of being in control when in reality we are only in control of how we react to situations.
I really admire artists when they use their words in a way that allows you to let go and fall into a space of vulnerability. We're conditioned to at look like we've got things under control and any sign of "struggle" is perceived as weakness. You need to experience turbulent times and difficult thoughts to figure out what it is you want.
We've become so numb and resistant to allowing ourselves to display how we truly feel so I think this songs encapsulates it wonderfully.
"There's someone gorgeous in my bed tonight, but I'm still petrified that I'll die alone"
& I wonder if Lauren ever called ..?
